Is Chiropractic safe for all ages?

Yes indeed, chiropractic can be used for all ages from babies to the elderly.

What will I expect when I see a Chiropractor?

The chiropractor should examine you and take a good history and explain fully what your problems are and how he or she can help. Usually a treatment plan is presented and you should be given exercises and tips to help yourself. This treatment plan should be reviewed regularly. As a member of The Chiropractic Association (Singapore), our clinic would do this at least every 12 visits, although in reality we do this much more frequently. Our promise to you is the more compliant you are by doing exercises and following advice the quicker you recover!

What is the difference between Chiropractic, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy?

Tradition and philosophy is what separates and distinguishes these professions!

Chiropractic

Always concerned with fixing the ‘bone out of place’ or subluxation. Primary care practitioner (does not need a referral) has a right to diagnose and order special tests like x-ray and MRI. Manipulation has always been used and highly skilled and trained. Deep philosophy holds that the body can heal itself treatments are aimed at enhancing this ability thereby relieving pain and disability.

Osteopathy

Concerned with overall movement reducing ‘osteopathic lesion’ in most ways similar to a chiropractic subluxation. Manipulation has always been used and highly skilled and trained for these primary care practitioners.

Physiotherapy

Usually rebalancing muscles and rehabilitation of muscular system. As secondary care practitioners they require a referral with a diagnosis prepared by a doctor or primary care practitioner. Recently, physiotherapists have started using some forms of spinal manipulation, which previously regarded these interventions as dangerous until the recent overwhelming evidence that has been published.

What about Tui Na and Thai Massage?

These are basic massage techniques carried out after little training. There is no assessment and diagnosis.

How often do I need Chiropractic?

We hope to address both the structural and functional issues that cause your problem and it is our goal to get every patient well as quickly as possible. This is achieved by spending adequate time with patients to provide needed care, as well as to identify problem areas in their everyday lives, and to advise them on aspects of a healthier lifestyle to support long-term benefit. We also use electrotherapy, traction and exercise and rehabilitation exercise as part of our treatment plans.
Often, patients will spend less for a course of chiropractic treatment with us than a course of discounted treatment at some other clinics as we offer a highly personalized and effective care.
As a general rule for most acute conditions, expect treatment 2-3 times per week for first 2-3 weeks until there is good relief. In severely acute cases daily treatment is to be expected.
Most of our patients’ courses of treatment will fall well within these general guidelines:
  • Uncomplicated (no disc or neurological involvement) back or neck pain of short duration: 4 – 8 visits/ 4 – 8 weeks
  • Uncomplicated (no disc or neurological involvement) back or neck pain of chronic duration: 8 -16 visits/ 8 -16 weeks
  • Disc lesion of short duration: 8 – 16 visits / 8 – 16 weeks
  • Chronic disc lesion, spinal stenosis, nerve entrapments: 12 – 20 visits / 12 – 20 week

Why do you offer Treatment Packages?

As a member of The Chiropractic Association (Singapore) and having served as president, I have ensured that our practice is committed to maintaining only the highest standards in an ethical practice environment. The result is a system which I believe has the patient benefit at the heart and provides excellent standards of care. In complying with this code, we limit the number of treatments per package to 10 at a given time, thereafter there is a review, where the need for a further course of treatment is assessed. Most times when the need arises patients are happy to continue care. As a result with patients understanding the need for treatment and being reviewed regularly there are usually good results.
There is no way to accurately determine whether a course of treatment will take exactly x number of treatments, these are usually determined by economic factors. Most clinics that offer ‘free screenings’ tend to offer large packages and are not members of the The Chiropractic Association (Singapore).
At Back II Life, we have always felt that the primary aim must be for patient benefit in any course of treatment prescribed and in the least time and costs incurred. Our aim is to help patients recover as soon as possible and we equip them with necessary tools to accomplish this, for example we advise patients on the appropriate stretches and exercises, ice or heat applications to use at various points in their recovery. We also help patients do active prevention of recurrence by strengthening affected areas and recommending a preventative maintenance treatment plan. We do not offer discounts cos we don’t discount our treatments.

Is Chiropractic treatment painful?

Although a minority of people do experience some discomfort after chiropractic adjustment, applying icepacks after treatment will ease the pain. As part of our approach we apply electrotherapy and ultrasound to avoid the post adjustment soreness.

How long will I have to wait to see results?

Results vary from person to person, but generally after a course of treatment lasting up to 3 weeks of treatment provided that you follow all instructions for home and selfcare.

How can Chiropractic help with Infantile Colic?

During delivery often times the baby can be in compromising positions and the neck can become twisted and go out to place, causing a stiff neck. Babies with colic that are reluctant to feed on both breasts equally or are unable to turn their heads to one side are excellent candidates for chiropractic treatment.

How can Chiropractic help with recurrent Ear Infections?

By adjusting the spine the nerves that connect to the ear and particularly the Eustachian tube of the middle ear – the supporting muscles are better able to relax and dilate so that fluid that accumulation can drain more effectively. Dietary advice and testing may help to eliminate foods that cause fluid accumulation and aggravate the problems.

How can Chiropractic help with Asthma?

Studies have shown that patients receiving chiropractic treatment rely less on inhalers than those not receiving such treatment. Adjustments also increase the a-p diameter of the chest by increasing the mobility of the rib cage and thoracic vertebrae.

I heard that Chiropractic treatments are really good during pregnancy and helps with labour, is this true?

Yes it is true. By focusing on the pelvic adjustments in the weeks just prior to delivery it is possible for the patient to have increased pelvic outlet for easier natural delivery to proceed. Together with you body’s production of the hormone relaxin – that promotes loosening of ligaments and tendons, it is possible to facilitate the passage of the baby through the birth canal. Prescribed exercises also help with easing this passage for natural deliveries. Evidence from clinical practice shows that mum’s undergoing treatment were able to have natural deliveries.
