Dr Neil Stakes reveals how extracorporeal shockwave therapy encourages your body to heal itself.
What is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)?
It is a non-invasive treatment for musculoskeletal pain, which was first designed for patients with kidney stones – to help break these stones down without surgery. Many patients reported additional benefits in pain relief following the treatment, so it was further developed to be used by athletes at sports medicine centres, international football teams and even for treating Olympic athletes!
At Back II Life, we use the EMS Swiss DolorClast® Method, the most researched and only CE and FDA-approved ESWT device.
How does it work?
ESWT works by boosting the body’s natural healing process. It’s a double-pronged approach: new blood vessels are formed, thus improving the healing process and inhibiting pain in the affected area.
Radial and Focused ESWT aims to provide relief without the use of anaesthetic, medication or surgical intervention. Rather, it works harmoniously with the body’s natural healing abilities.
Conditions treated
This short and simple procedure for proven and effective pain relief, can assist in pain relief caused by the following conditions:
- Plantar fascitis: foot pain and inflammation (worse on initial movements after rest)
- Heel spurs: bone formation at the back of the foot, commonly associated with plantar fascitis. ESWT has a proven 70 percent success rate for heel spurs.
- Achilles tendon problems: strains and injuries to the tendon connecting the calf muscle to the heel bone.
- Tennis/golfer’s elbow: when the outer/inner portion of the elbow becomes tender.
- Shin splints: pain in the shins due to excessive running or jumping.
- Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome: outer thigh/knee pain due to running or cycling injuries.
- Trigger points: targeted muscle areas which may feel taut or painful.
- Non-union fractures & Venous ulcers: these are other applications currently used.
Currently, Dr Stakes is the only SDCA certified practitioner and Asia trainer in Singapore and uses the original EMS Swiss DolorClast® as well as the latest Swiss DuoClast® that provides Radial and Focused ESWT to reach deeper structures (DuoClast® Orchard clinic only).
After an initial assessment, it is best to attend weekly therapy sessions for five weeks as an initial treatment. Back II Life also provides nutritional supplements, to boost the body’s healing process, as well as advice with regards to diet and lifestyle intervention. These further efforts complement ESWT well by improving recovery and provide you with a complete and thorough healing process.
